10 Great Movies That Scared You Without Showing Anything

3. The House Of The Devil

Released in 2009 but modelled after 1970s horror classics like Halloween, The House of the Devil follows a college girl who takes a babysitting job that slowly becomes more than she bargained for. It's delightfully old fashioned and proof that in the hands of a skilled filmmaker, simple shots of a character walking down a hallway can still be extremely tense in the modern age.

And that's what most of the film is. You follow Samantha alone in this house on a quiet evening, knowing that something is about to go wrong any second.

One sequence that runs for two minutes sees her walk down the hall and enter the bathroom - that's pretty much it. Doesn't sound that scary, right? On the surface, it's not, but director Ti West manages to pull scenes like these off, using the soundtrack and the perfect amount of dim lighting to create tension. One actor, a creaky house, a great soundtrack and effective cinematography is all West needs to scare you.
