10 Great Movies That Sounded Like Horrible Ideas At The Time

1. The Social Network (2010)

The Social NetworkHorrible Idea At The Time Because... It's A Movie About A Freakin' Social Networking Site My initial reaction in hearing the announcement that there was going to be a movie made about Facebook is so incomprehensible that I can't actually type it into a sentence. Just know that there was lots and lots of screaming, and plenty of me being restrained by those nice men in white coats at 3 o'clock in the morning. Point is, Facebook is the last subject in the world that - on the surface, at least - appears to warrant a movie deal. It's Facebook. You use it to judge people that you are no longer in contact with and "like" funny cut pictures: no matter how interesting the origin story sounded, it's still going to be a movie about a social networking website. Then, of course, we heard that David Fincher (awesome) was going to be directing, and Aaron Sorkin (is there a finer penman on today's good earth?) was on writing duties. Hm. Still, The Social Network still sounded like an awful idea - a movie that was sure to lose at ton of money at the box office, because who cared enough to see it? And then, on opening day, we were suddenly watching a smart, relevant, beautifully-acted drama, scored and shot with undeniable beauty, and crafted like the most gripping courtroom drama imaginable. It was a revelation, a movie that spoke not just about Facebook, but about the way we live our lives today. Most surprising of all, though, it was even... cool? Yes, amdist the panic attacks and frequent cries of "I need 10 CCs of morphine - stat" (my doctor is an enthusiastic man) somehow emerged as what is arguably the best and most impressive movie of 2010.
