10 Great Movies Where the World Literally Ends

3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

Melancholia Ending
Buena Vista

While most end-of-the-world satires tend to tack closely to humanity's failings and the ruinous effects of our negligence, Garth Jennings' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, based on Douglas Adams' novel of the same name, takes a markedly different approach.

The Earth is set for demolition by an alien race called the Vogons in order to make way for a hyperspace bypass, and everyman Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) is the only human who seems to know about it or have the inclination to do anything.

Facing a wall of galactic bureaucracy, Arthur fails to save Earth from its untimely demise, and it is zapped out of space by the Vogons, who carry out their duty with grim resolve.

Not to worry though, as there is another one on the way soon. Slartibartfast the planet builder (Bill Nighy) has been working on a new Earth to serve as a replacement. But, after all of his adventures out in the wider universe, Arthur's small mind has expanded and he's not eager to go back anytime soon.
