10 Great Movies Where the World Literally Ends

2. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)

Melancholia Ending

Quirky, offbeat comedy turning dark and pretty final in its closing moments, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World arrived among a spate of fun indie films with a big sci-fi premise at their core (check out Safety Not Guaranteed and The Future).

Managing to combine the vibe of Little Miss Sunshine with the doom of the biggest disaster movies, the film stays true to its title in all senses.

Insurance salesman Dodge (Steve Carell) is the titular seeker, adrift in the face of an impending apocalypse, as an asteroid hurtles towards Earth, and his wife leaves him for good. His young, attractive neighbour, Penny (Keira Knightley) agrees to help Dodge track down his high school sweetheart before it's too late, and they set out on a cross-country road trip.

And the world does indeed end, with Penny and Dodge realising that they're actually kind of perfect for each other at just the wrong moment, as the asteroid strikes and engulfs the pair, their newfound love, the planet, and everything anyone has ever known. Comedy gold.
