10 Great Movies With Terrible CGI
6. The Social Network
Nobody exemplifies this philosophy that "the best visual effects are the ones we don't notice" better than David Fincher. In The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, most viewers didn't notice green-screen was used to heighten the harsh weather. In Gone Girl, you could never tell everything outside the house of Ben Affleck's character was CGI. Viewers of The Social Network were baffled when they learned digital trickery was used to make Armie Hammer depict the Winklevoss twins.
However, there's one visual in The Social Network that doesn't work. While Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin are speaking outside a party, their breath is digital! Although this visual was inserted to illustrate how cold it is, it looks like Zuckerberg and Saverin have freeze breath like Superman or Iceman.
What's worse is this visual is completely inconsequential. We can see the characters are shivering so we know it's chilly. Why did the visual team have to force an unconvincing effect to hammer this fact in? The sad thing is that once you notice the CGI breath, it becomes so distracting, you don't listen to a word either character is saying.
