10 Great Movies You Didn't Understand The First Time
4. Predestination
Time travel is always a confusing subject. Even when handled in a pretty straightforward manner in something like Back To The Future, there's all sorts of paradoxes and butterfly effect problems to consider. Trying to work out the details and scenarios can become overwhelming in the simplest of these films, and Predestination is decidedly not simple.
This confusion is likely because nearly every main character in the film: John, Jane, the Barkeep, the baby, and the Fizzle Bomber are all the same person from different points in time. This is a character who will have sex with himself, give birth to himself and ultimately kill himself. But of course all of that isn't made clear until the very end, by which point the film has seduced you in with its soft narrative before unleashing twist after twist.
The entire film is littered with paradoxes and a seemingly infinite cycle of a singular character's actions. It's engrossing to watch, even if it takes a few more tries to completely make sense of it all.
