10 Great Movies You Didn't Understand The First Time

3. Enemy

The spider, what does it mean?! This psychological drama remains criminally under-seen, but for those who have experienced it, it stuck with most in profound ways.

The Jake Gyllenhaal doppelgänger film follows a meek teacher who discovers an actor that is identical is every physical way to him, scars and all. Their lives begin to intersect as his mind starts to unravel. The mystery of the two has caused much debate amongst viewers. Are they twins, is one just a split personality like Tyler Durden, or do both exist as warring personalities in someone€™s mind? The film makes you look hard for answers and gives none of its own.

Beyond trying to figure out how there's two Gyllenhaals, the meaning of the film is similarly clouded in mystery. The spider is thought to represent everything from oppression, powerful women, and a fear of settling down. Of course in the midst of seeing a woman transformed into a giant spider only to met with a disappointed sigh, it€™s hard to be thinking about any of that instead of trying to piece together how any of this movie made sense.
