10 Great Movies You Probably Missed (That You Can Now Catch On Netflix)

7. Midnight Special

A low-budget sci-fi that mixes family drama with fantastical sci-fi elements, Midnight Special follows a gifted young boy, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and his father, Roy (Michael Shannon) as they attempt to escape government forces and a dangerous cult that seeks to capture the child.

Midnight Special came and went in early 2016 (due to releasing around the same time as Batman V Superman), and because of its unimpressive box-office run, there wasn't a lot of word-of-mouth and not a lot of people saw it, but it absolutely deserves your attention.

Lieberher gives one of the best child performances in recent years, and with a supporting cast including Adam Driver, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst and the aforementioned Shannon, the acting is top-notch across the board. The movie is like a cross between The Fugitive and an early Spielberg sci-fi movie, and if that doesn't sell you, then nothing will.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
