10 Great Performances In Otherwise TERRIBLE Horror Movies
6. William H. Macy - Psycho (1998)
The very definition of an unnecessary film, Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot remake of Hitchock's seminal classic Psycho remains one of modern cinema's most maligned oddities.
Aside from the simple fact that it exists, there is a veritable laundry list of issues plaguing this film but above all else, its cast has always been the biggest point of contention. With particular ire shot towards Vince Vaughn's misguided turn as Norman Bates and Anne Heche's stunted performance as Marion Crane, you'd assume the rest of the cast were equally tiresome.
However, the one diamond in the rough is William H. Macy, a performer known for bringing barrels of energy and finesse to any part he's given. Where the rest of Psycho's cast seek to imitate the likes of Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, Macy makes the part of Milton Arbogast his own, giving the impression that he was the only one who was actually trying to make a decent film.
Macy is immediately likable in anything he's in and that makes his sudden face-slashing atop the staircase sting all the more because he was the only person worth watching in this tripe.
Truly a waste of such a great performer.
