10 Great Performances In Otherwise TERRIBLE Horror Movies

7. Octavia Spencer - Ma

It's fair to say that Blumhouse's horror output can be very hit and miss. For every Get Out, or Insidious, there's a whole host of mediocre efforts that fail at the first hurdle to scare their audiences. Perhaps one of their biggest missteps of recent years was 2019's Ma.

A psychological horror story with a mild slasher edge, Ma told the story of lonely veterinary technician Sue Anne who befriends a group of teenagers after buying them alcohol. Before long, Sue Anne is allowing the kids to throw parties in her basement and revelling in her newfound popularity, but not everyone is convinced her intentions are innocent.

Sadly that solid premise is squandered in a routine and frankly boring affair that saves all of its promised nastiness for the big finale, but most of us had already tuned out by then.

The film's only real saving grace however is the wonderfully macabre lead performance by Octavia Spencer. The speed at which Spencer shifts from doting maternal figure to an unhinged psychopath is genuinely chilling. She exhibits a great deal of control over any scene she's in and in a better film, Sue Anne could have been a villain for the history books.
