Writer-director Jason Krawczyk's 2015 movie is a delightfully unexpected genre-bender which proves to be as hilarious as it is thrilling, with a career best performance from leading man Henry Rollins (whose acting achievements hadn't necessarily measured up to his music, writing or spoken word performances before this).

Rollins is Jack, an anonymous retiree in an anonymous American town, doing his utmost to get through day-to-day life with as little social interaction as possible. However, Jack's shady past has a habit of catching up with him, frequently landing him in considerably more trouble than he'd like. A run-in with some local criminals threatens to escalate, but there's one major complication: no matter what anyone does, Jack is seemingly impossible to kill.

An unorthodox blend of supernatural horror, black comedy and gangster thriller, He Never Died may be another relatively cut-price production, but in this instance it never feels constrained by its low budget, as it keeps things squarely centred on the characters and dialogue. This approach proves hugely successful, thanks first and foremost to the captivating central turn from Rollins.
