10 Great Sci-Fi Films Ruined By Terrible Endings
1. Glass - Secret Organisations, YouTube Hits And Puddles
Shyamalan has done it again, coming dishearteningly close to greatness in this unexpected trilogy capper. Glass acted as a sequel to 2016’s excellent Split, and the severely underrated 2000’s comic-book film Unbreakable. It brought the trio of David Dunn, The Beast (A.K.A Kevin) and the titular Mr. Glass together in a pink lathered psyche hospital.
This was a deliberate slow burner, offering up an analysis of the three leads (played by Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Samuel L. Jackson) asking them to reconsider their unique abilities. Audiences began to question themselves, as to whether these men were really super – even after seeing their incredible feats from bending bars to unlocking secrets with the touch of a hand.
Glass seemed as it was heading for an explosive finale, when it pulled the rug in the worst kind of way. The climactic battle took place in the hospital car park, and ended with Mr. Glass dying from a single punch with his brittle bones, Kevin taking a rifle shot to the stomach and bleeding out, and the worst of all David Dunn being drowned in a puddle by some random goon. Yes… a puddle.
The astoundingly awful conclusion was partnered with two further twists. First, Dr. Elle Staple was a part of a secret anti-superhero organisation tasked with convincing the men they weren’t special – which felt overwhelmingly unnecessary and complicated. Secondly, Mr. Glass’ planned the release of CCTV footage of The Beast and David Dunn in action, proving to the world that superheroes exist.
However, any modern world wouldn’t give those videos a second glance, and definitely wouldn’t have the impact that Glass tries to portray.
