Taking the bold choice to omit the banger that is Justin Hayward's Forever Autumn, Steven Spielberg did a good job of bringing the H. G. Wells penned sci-fi classic War of the Worlds to the big screen in 2005.

Starring Tom Cruise as a man who prefers cranes to his own children, the movie plunges the Earth into all out conflict when a group of giant, heavily armed robots descend on the planet. Where's your crane now, eh Tom?

Cruise's character Ray must survive the attack whilst keeping his two children safe. They are Robbie, played by Justin Chatwin, and Rachel, played by a constantly screaming Dakota Fanning.

Rachel does not shut up. Yes, she may only be ten years old, and yes, this may be an incredibly frightening situation, but just give it a rest will you? It's bad enough that your dad has to deal with massive metal death machines without you deafening him all the time!

War of the Worlds would be a lot more enjoyable if viewers actually liked one of its main protagonists. Instead, Rachel might actually be the worst part of a film about evil alien invaders.
