Okay, so this one isn't actually Forest Whitaker's fault. Nothing is ever Forest Whitaker's fault.

Saw Gerrera first appeared in the Star Wars universe in the animated series The Clone Wars. Across a four-episode arc, Saw and his sister Steela are trained by the Republic to lead a rebellion on the planet Onderon. They are successful, but at a cost, as Steela dies in the battle.

So, when it was revealed that Mr. Whitaker would be brining Gerrera to the big screen in Rogue One, hardcore Star Wars fans got every excited. In hindsight, they needn't have bothered.

The character was given nothing to do, merely serving as an expo dump for the actual stars of the movie. This is a far cry from the dashing hero fans saw in The Clone Wars, which prompted many to wonder why Gerrera was included in Rogue One in the first place.

Whilst the character has gone on to be more fleshed out in other Star Wars media, his initial live-action appearance left a lot to be desired from the diehards.

As for the casuals, they were probably just wondering why an Academy Award winner had been brought in just to stand around and look bored.
