Macedonian-Australian director Goran Stolevski made his feature-length debut in 2022 with You Won't Be Alone, a film in his native tongue that ultimately got selected as Australia's submission for Best International Film at the Oscars.

It didn't win - in fact, it didn't even get nominated - but at least he tried.

When Nevena is just a baby, a horrible witch named Maria attempts to steal her, only for Nevena's mother to intervene and promise to give the child up voluntarily at the age of 16. She then did what any good mother would do - run away and raise her baby in a cave.

Sadly, this doesn't work, as Maria eventually claims Nevena and makes her into a witch, too, complete with the power to change her appearance. After spending her whole life in solitude, Nevena must learn to navigate the real world whilst also coming to terms with her dark powers.

You Won't Be Alone is an incredibly deep movie, full of great characters with conflicting motivations and rich backstories. Also, Nevena is played by seven different actors across the movie, which is shapeshifting done right.
