10 Great Shapeshifter Horror Movies You May Have Missed

2. Significant Other

If your partner was replaced by an alien who looked exactly like them, would you spot the difference? Thankfully for Ruth, the protagonist of Significant Other, her answer is yes.

Released in 2022 and directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, Significant Other kicks off when Ruth's boyfriend Harry proposes to her. Knowing that Harry has always been against marriage, Ruth gets suspicious and makes the startling discovery that her beloved is not who he seems to be.

Rather than repeatedly changing bodies like some shapeshifters, this alien is stuck in Harry's form and, as a result, becomes finely attuned to his emotions. This includes his feelings towards Ruth, and he ends up asking her to come back with him to his home planet, which Ruth responds to by stabbing him.

A simple "no" would have sufficed.

The question posed by this film - is looking and sounding like someone enough to make you become them? - is fascinating and Maika Monroe (Ruth) and Jake Lacy (Harry) have tremendous chemistry with one another, which really holds the story together.

One to check out if you like your horror movies to have some soul about them.
