10 Great Slasher Horror Movies With Annoying Final Girls
8. Sam Carpenter - Scream (2022)
The latest entry in the Scream franchise introduced another curious wrinkle into the original mythos. Billy Loomis, the big bad of the original film whose diabolical antics were horribly undercut via retcon in Scream 3, now has a surprise kid who's all grown-up and back in Woodsboro as a new slate of Ghostface killings kick off.
It's barely even allowed the room to be a plot twist before discount Randy reveals this new killing spree is a 'requel'; a rehashed sequel that just repeats everything from the original. It's something that many cinema goers have been expressing dissatisfaction with lately.
While the satire of the requel format is on point here, the Billy plotline doesn't do much to make Sam a compelling or easy-to-root-for lead like Sidney Prescott was in the earlier films. The borderline convoluted story threads that allow her boyfriend Richie to be one of the killers also don't quite pack the punch of the Billy reveal from the original film.
Hopefully the next instalment can course correct slightly and give Sam a more logical path to walk down as the new lead protagonist. Actress Melissa Barrera did a fine job with the material but the lack of originality ultimately hindered this long-awaited sequel.
