10 Great Zombie Horror Movies That Aren't Really About Zombies
1. 28 Days Later
If you're a big fan of zombie apocalypses (although, who isn't?), then you probably foresaw this classic horror flick making it to the top of this list. This movie not only delivered a stunning zombie experience without using the Z-word but also changed how the undead were presented in cinema.
Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later follows a bike courier named Jim who awakens to find that Britain has been ravaged by the Rage virus. This highly contagious illness causes hyper aggression and has led to the breakdown of civilization.
Although those infected with the Rage virus are not technically zombies, they introduced something to the genre that plenty of other zombie flicks would adopt - that being speed.
These monsters weren't the slow, bumbling Romero zombies audiences were used to as they sprinted like hurricanes. This, naturally, made the film pulse-pounding, as the ordeal of the heroes was intense and thrilling.
When paired up with the brilliant performances from actors like Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston and more, the stellar script from Alex Garland and the strong directing from Danny Boyle, it's no wonder this movie revived the zombie genre. That last statement is all the more impressive when you remember that there aren't even any zombies in this flick.
