10 Great Zombie Horror Movies That Aren't Really About Zombies

Oh, to take a walk inside the mind of David Cronenberg, what a disgusting nightmare that must be.

Rabid was far from Cronenberg's first feature film, but it did come early in his career, before the likes of Videodrome, Dead Ringers and The Fly made him a household name. As such, it was a deeply low-budget affair, but that didn't stop him from putting his signature body horror all over the flick.

The movie follows a girl called Rose (played by porn actress Marilyn Chambers) after she is involved in a motorcycle accident. Following experimental surgery, she's left with a stinger under her armpit, which she uses to drink blood. Naturally, it also looks suspiciously like the female anatomy - oh, Cronenberg, you sick genius.

But, this stinger doesn't just lead to death, as everyone she feeds on turns into a blood-hungry mutant who transfers their strange infection through bite. It certainly sounds like a good old case of zombification, but the origins from Rose's gynaecological armpit and the similarity to rabies make it clear that they're far from the undead.

There's so much early Cronenberg brilliance in this non-zombie flick.
