10 Great Zombie Horror Movies That Aren't Really About Zombies

[REC] not only has the luxury of being referred to as one of the best zombie movies of the modern age but also as one of the best found-footage movies of all time. If you've already watched it, then you likely understand why, as it's more than deserving of those accolades. Still, it's amusing to remember that this technically isn't a zombie film.

This Spanish-language flick follows a reporter and her cameraman as they get locked inside an apartment building while a dangerous infection turns the residents into monsters. It's a well-executed, textbook horror movie with some big scares and a sense of claustrophobia, which is heightened by the use of found footage.

However, while the outbreak of the infection appears to be zombie-based, there's a secret behind the origin that flips it on its head. This is technically a spoiler alert, so be warned if you want to go into this one completely blind.

You find out in the latter part of the film that the infection is a supernatural pathogen resulting from demonic possession. It is, in essence, a contagious possession, meaning that while the whole thing is a zombie movie on the surface, it's technically a case of demonic shenanigans.
