10 Greatest Battles In Sci-Fi Movie History

1. Battle Of Hoth - Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

The oldest entry on this list by well over a decade, the Battle of Hoth is undoubtedly the most iconic sci-fi battle of all time.

Discovering the hidden Rebel base on the ice planet of Hoth, the Empire descends in force, attacking the Rebels and forcing a hasty evacuation.

Released in 1980, the Battle of Hoth is still beautiful today. AT-AT walkers marching through the snow, TIE fighters darkening the sky, X-wings frantically defending, all kicking the movie's story off with one hell of a bang.

The battle also subverted our expectations from the off; gone was the assumption that the good guys would always find a way to win - in fact, they suffered incredibly heavy casualties during the Empire's bombardment of their base, and Luke, Han, Leia and co. were lucky to escape with their lives.

The Battle of Hoth is iconic for many number of reasons, and even 40 years later it's truly something to behold.
