8. The Raid - The Three-Way Fight
This whole film is one big gasp and wince-inducing fight sequence. Director Gareth Evans delivered one of the most skilfully choreographed and brutally realistic martial arts movies weve seen in quite some time. Every bone crunch and head punch was shown in unflinching detail as our hero Rama (Iko Uwais) is forced to lead a team of cops in a fight for survival as they seek to escape from a gang-controlled tower block. The one sequence which really sticks out however is a three way fight including Rama, his brother Andi (Donny Alamsyah) and the psychotic badass that is Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian). Rama is trying to rescue his brother from Mad Dogs clutches but as one might imagine, Mad Dog isnt willing to let him go without a fight. So, like any self-respecting psychotic badass would, he decides to take them both on in hand-to-hand combat. The resultant six minute long fight scene is blisteringly vicious and is aided in no small part by Evans wonderful camera work pirouetting around the three fighters. Its one of those moments where the whole cinema seemingly holds its collective breath. The mass exhale and audible swear words which greeted the scenes denouement is credit to just how impressive the sequence really is.
