1. Verbal Kint/Keyser Soze (The Usual Suspects)
Spelling Films/Gramercy/PolyGram EntertainmentThe ultimate twist ending, Kevin Spacey's slick narrator Verbal Kint is the mastermind to top all masterminds. Recounting the story of how he got involved with an criminal gang working for a mysterious shadowy crime boss known only as Keyser Soze, he plays the poor but gifted cripple role to the hilt, suckering in both the audience and the detective to whom he is telling the story to. Upon completion of the tale, the detective has to agree with Kint's assessment that with the entire gang dead and Soze in the wind, the police's trail has gone stone cold. He then limps out of the station, seemingly a victim in the whole messy affair. It's only when the detective turns around and see the notice board Kint was facing the entire time they were talking that it clicks. Kint is Soze. The entire story, the entire plot of the whole friggin' movie was either completely or partially fabricated, Kint using names pulled off of the board and even the detective's own coffee mug to lie his way out of police custody. It's when we cut back to Kint walking down the street and his limp straightens out and he lights a cigarette and gets into a moving car that it's confirmed. You never saw it coming. That's what makes Kint so brilliant. The sheer balls to sit there in a police station, under the noses of all the cops and lie your way clean out of trouble to an experienced detective is impressive. To quote Kint/Soze ", the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist," and that is what put him firmly in our number one spot. Did we miss anybody?
