9. A Bugs Life (1998): Hopper's Death Scene
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phb2qZEDHQA Another wonderful death scene from a criminally underrated movie. Everyone forgets how great this film was because it came between two of Pixar's greatest ever (arguably the two best ever) Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2. Had this film been released today, it would have gotten much more respect than it did. Any way... Hopper, the antagonist of the movie, an evil grasshopper who uses the ant colony as his personal slaves gets what is coming to him in a glorious final scene... perhaps Pixar's very best. Throughout the movie Hopper (voiced wonderfully by Kevin Spacey) always reminds the ants of their place and order in the world. He makes the argument that because Grasshoppers are stronger than ants, their species deserves to rule over them. Therefore, it is only fitting that Hopper should meet his end buy a species far stronger than he is. To drum the point home even more, Hopper, who is eventually eaten alive by birds, is in fact more accurately fed to baby chicks by a mother bird- showing that, although Hopper may be a big shot in his little insect universe, there is always someone stronger than you who can very easily remind you of your worth in the universe. In a sense this is a great metaphor for death itself... that no matter how big , important and almost invincible you think you are, in the end you will die like all the rest of us. This is probably also the only film where I can say I have genuinely been frightened by chicks.
