10 Greatest Ever Creature Movies

3. Alien (1979)

Alien Franchise
Fox

Alien is the definitive 1979 sci-fi horror whose appeal is all about its primary antagonist: an extraterrestrial creature which stalks and kills the crew of the Nostromo - until it comes into contact with cinema's OG badass, Ellen Ripley.

The film has gone on to become a cult classic and was critically acclaimed after its release, garnering top tier awards and box office success for Best Visual Effects, Best Direction and Best Supporting Actress to name a few. And it's launched a franchise that continues to release films now.

The star of the show is definitely the Xenomorph, which is made extra terrifying thanks to its pharyngeal jaws and waxed black skin. Seeing that smashing through bone and metal, as the creatures restrain their prey with long, creepy hands is one of the most iconic images in all of monster film history.
