Jaws is of course the 1975 horror thriller film that became a global phenomenon and currently is billed as the first modern day “blockbuster”.

Based on a true story, referred to as ‘The Amity Incident’, a rogue great white shark came near the shores of a small town in Massachusetts, terrorizing swimmers and laying fear in the community. Ultimately the shark was found and neutered after a lengthy sea battle, which holds parallels with the film.

It was basically the film that invented the way we think about summer blockbusters, as well as giving the world an entire catalogue of shark movie ripoffs (some of which have been incredible and some of which have had Sharknado in the title). It's a bonafide classic and one of Spielberg's greatest achievements, despite the troubled production. But then, the broken shark did reframe how the director had to make it and led to one of the most iconic monster movie set-ups ever.
