4. Naomi Watts Vs Laura Harring - Mulholland Drive
There's something about mind-bending thrillers and off-beat, challenging material that goes perfectly hand in hand with high-charged sex scenes. There's probably something to be said about the fact that the relationship between that type of film and supposedly deviant forms of sexuality, as well as apparently spur-of-the-moment homosexuality (see also: Black Swan,) but this is not the time or the place for accusations of reductive exoticism. David Lynch's career has been underpinned by sex and violence, and in the deeply confusing, but completely engaging Mulholland Drive those twin pillars are expressed rather blatantly by the proximity of two hugely important scenes starring Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. First the pair find a recently dead young woman in Diane Selwyn's apartment and then almost immediately fall into each others arms, having sex in an erotic side-track that would have shocked even those Lynch fans who know what to expect of the trickster director. As the scene plays out, it becomes pretty obvious why TV executives decided to pull the plug on Mulholland Drive as a TV show even before the pilot was completed.
