4. The Last Starfighter (1984)

Alex Rogan, a typical American teenager manages to achieve the high score on his favourite arcade machine, Starfighter. As a result the games creator approaches him and takes Alex on a ride, revealing that Starfighter is in fact based on a real intergalactic war and that Alex is wanted as a pilot for a new, real life, Starfighter named the Gunship. It€™s a classic zero to hero tale that, like Tron, incorporated classic game tropes to fit the aesthetic of the film, and despite some serious ageing issues, it's still a very compelling watch. After the credits Atari even teased a Starfighter arcade machine as coming soon, though the machine never transpired due to the cost of production. Instead Starfighter became a very popular console only Atari game.
