10 Greatest Ever Musical Movies

6. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Jack Nicholson might have had one of his early roles in the original 1960 Comedy Film The Little Shop of Horrors, but that B-movie darling can't really hold a candle to the film adaptation of the 1982 Off-Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors.

Rick Moranis might be busy being a parent, but when he wasn't shrinking his kids he was tangled in a murderous web of vines with jazz-singing plant Audrey II, feeding it his own blood and eventually other people to satiate its desires and bring fame and prosperity to the run-down garden shop he works in. He plays lovable nerd Seymour, and performs amazingly whilst doing so.

Little Shop was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and it absolutely shows. The lip-syncing of Audrey II's with the smooth voice of RnB singer and voice actor Levi Stubbs alone makes the film deserve this accolade. When your puppetry garners some praise from Muppets mastermind Jim Henson, you know you've done something right.

Obviously it has a range of excellent tracks, whether you want the jazzy stylings of the mutant plant or the more heartfelt, emotional moments later on, but excellent casting throughout; Steve Martin as the masochistic dentist is a particular highlight.
