10 Greatest Ever Musical Movies

5. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rocky Horror Picture Show
20th Century Fox

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is perhaps the most polarising entry here; upon its release it wasn't received that warmly critically, but nobody can argue the impact that it has had on popular culture. The Rocky Horror Picture Show completely exhibits

Tim Curry's performance as the lead character Dr Frank N' Furter is a clear example of the man's genius as an actor; very few actors would have the presence necessary to pull the character off nearly as well as Curry did. Moreover, the pastiche of B-movie science fiction and horror conventions is welcome, especially in the 70s. It was a subversive, welcome shake-up to cinema.

Whilst the subject matter of Rocky Horror might not have aged nearly as well as it could have, and Rocky Horror is responsible for giving us the Time Warp, you can't argue that there is a lot of love of the movie. Audiences nowadays flock to screenings or stage performances of the original Rocky Horror Show in full costume and did so very shortly after its initial release, showing just how committed to the original productions they truly are.

If that doesn't prove how impactful it has been, little will.
