6. Mant! (Matinee)

mant

In Joe Dante's 1993 comedy, producer Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman) uses every gimmick possible to promote his new sci-fi shocker, Mant! As you've probably deduced, it exposes the startling possibility of a half-man, half-ant hybrid following an atomic mutation. In a homage to Hitchcock's press feature for The Birds, Woolsey emerges from silhouette to announce, with an intimidating poker-face, the prospect of Nature gone wrong . ''I feel I should warn you. The story of Mant! is based on scientific fact...'' Then begins the film Ed Wood wished he could've made; with captions invading the screen( ''So terrifying... only screams can describe it!''), shots of panicked crowds and, of course, a giant pair of ant claws destroying a cityscape. Mant! is included in full on the Region 1 laser disc, but not, sadly, on any DVD release.
