10 Greatest Films Within Films

5. Machete (Planet Terror)

theartistmachetemachete Easily the best of the fake 'grindhouse' trailers included in Tarantino and Rodriguez' double-bill, Machete proved that less really is more. As fun and frenetic as Rodriguez' feature-length version was, it didn't really add much to what the trailer had offered. Perhaps that's because he had to contrive a plot that incorporated all the shots we'd already seen, no matter how improbable it may have become. The result isn't exactly seamless, but it's a B movie so no one notices/cares. Danny Trejo plays the former Mexican federale betrayed by both sides of the border- and now he's out for revenge. The trailer is three minutes of gore, bad dialogue and nudity. In other words, perfect grindhouse. The sight of Machete firing a motorbike-mounted machine gun through an explosion is basically a prerequisite. Rodriguez seems to have resurrected the Mexploitation genre (his sequel, Machete Kills, is confirmed for next year), and with it, let's hope, a new batch of fake trailers.
