Even if he is New Yorks equivalent to the Wealdstone Raider, Spike Lee makes good movies. And Inside Man is his movie for people that dont watch his joints. Of course it has to be set in New York, I mean the only people that love New York more than Spike Lee are Woody Allen and your ex-girlfriend. Clive Owen tells you straight up that hes planned and executed the perfect bank heist and the film is then split narratively between the robbery and the reaction. Its left to Denzel Washington and Chiwetel Ejiofor to sort through the smoke bombs and mirrors whilst being cool badge wielding badasses as everything unfurls slowly in front of them and theyre left to figure out why nothing was apparently taken and how Clive Owens band of merry muggers got away. I dont want to give too much away about the hows and the whys because Inside Man does have some nice little twists in its twisty little tail, but it does feel like Christopher Plummer has a tendency for picking roles that have the faint whiff of the Führer to them. Alongside all the usual Spike Lee love tokens towards the city he loves and the police force he loathes.
