10 Greatest Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

9. Martyrs (2008)

A shining part of the brutal "New French Extreme" wave of horror movies, this follows two young women, both victims of child abuse, who set out to seek revenge on the family responsible for their ordeal. Little to do they know they€™ve set themselves on a path onto an even more horrific ordeal of sickening depravity. Not knowing where exactly it goes is part of the monumentally disturbing horror experience that lies before you. It€™s directed with urgency by Pascal Laugier (The Tall Man, House of Voices), taking the audience on an uncomfortable odyssey of extremity and violence that feels all-too-real. But importantly it€™s also got emotion to match the graphicness, making you really care about the characters as they go through hell. If ever there were a horror film that was used as an endurance test for fans of the genre then this would fit the bill perfectly.
