They may have kicked off the increasingly graphic Saw franchise but James Wan and Leigh Whannell prove here that they can scare without a single drop of blood in sight. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne play a married couple who move with their three young children into a new home. Not long after they get there they start experiencing disturbing bumps in the night which leads one day to their son falling into a baffling coma. They soon discover that he has become lost in a supernatural realm called The Further, with various demons hoping to claim his earthly body. Despite it appealing squarely to a mainstream audience familiar setting, amiable characters, boo! moments its also a pleasingly weird film, not least in the handsome but off-kilter production and sound design. After putting the audience through a relentless series of scares, ranging from subtly creepy to in-your-face jumps, it concludes with a wonderful horror house walkthrough of a finale.
