While Iron Man kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger that really paved the way for team-up movie, The Avengers.

Denied the opportunity to serve his country in the battle against Hitler and the Nazi’s in World War II, a young Steve Rogers meets scientist Abraham Erskine, who has created a Super Soldier Serum. Enhanced physically by the serum, Steve becomes Captain America and takes the fight to Germany and defeats the Red Skull in a dramatic battle in the skies, before crash-landing in ice, remaining frozen for 70 years.

The final scene deserves its place among the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s greatest climaxes – with a Twilight Zone eeriness to events as Rogers wakes up in a hospital with a vintage baseball game playing on the radio. Remembering the game from having attended it in person back in the 1940s, Steve suspects something sinister at foot.

Cap breaks free of what is revealed to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. compound and emerges in the middle of New York’s Time Square – unrecognisable to the city he last saw almost a century before.

Jon Hornbuckle hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
