The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension is considered a cult classic by just about everyone who's seen it. It takes place in a world not unlike our own, but also not unlike a comic book.

Think about a pop culture icon with video games, comics and music all based on them. Celebrities with omnipresent merchandise and specific public personas have been around since Gene Autry. They were especially popular in the 70's and 80's, with celebrities like Kiss and Mr. T getting rich from outlandish personas.

Of course, behind all of the merchandise and publicity they were basically ordinary human beings, and certainly not the out of this world characters seen in the comics and merchandise.

The conceit of Buckaroo Banzai is that he is exactly the larger than life figure presented in his merchandise. This movie takes place in a world where if you read a comic about him, however crazy the events in it are, they probably happened.

It's a world where the multi-talented hero that you read about in a comic exists and totally has the kind of adventures that a twelve year old fan would want to believe their idol has. And he's exactly as good a person as that kid would want him to really be.
