10 Greatest Meta Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time

8. Turbo Kid

Ready Player One Gundam
Lionsgate

Turbo Kid is a crazy mashup of scifi subgenres wrapped in a nostalgic 80's veneer. Set in a hellish post apocalyptic reality where style and culture seem to have gotten stuck in the 80's, this movie is filled with warlords, killer robots, BMX bikes and superpowers.

This is probably the most meta film in a post apocalyptic setting ever made. It takes place in a world where a kid's favorite comic book hero can not only turn out to have been real but in which that hero's power suit has just been waiting for the right person to find it. The boundary between fiction and reality is pretty blurred and what starts off as a futuristic fanboy's fantasy changes into a heroic adventure.

Turbo Kid is an incredibly fun movie but it's also pretty wacky. The world the filmmakers have built raises a whole slew of questions that never really get answered. However, even without those answers and even with the sometimes random writing and occasionally broken logic, this film is a true original.
