7. The Mist

The best creature features shine just as much of a spotlight on the errors of humanity as they do the evils of monsters. That’s where the majority of The Mist’s tension comes from – the erosion of social order and morality.

When a thick, impenetrable mist envelops the town, a group of locals take shelter in a nearby grocery store, whereupon they debate the nature and origin of the otherworldly meteorological phenomenon. The store’s resident religious quack blames it on the apocalypse, while others attribute it to a recent military operation designed to open gateways to other dimensions.

This leads to in-fighting and murder, as Twilight Zone levels of paranoia begin to take hold. One thing everyone can agree on though, is not to go out into the mist, which is inhabited by giant spiders, insectoid creatures and tentacle monsters.

Its special effects might be a little ropey by today’s standards, but the mist is a fantastic throwback to old school monster movies, a gripping thriller in which the presence of the extra-dimensional creatures is felt more often than they are seen.
