10 Greatest Movies Never Made

7. Megalopolis

Nobody can ever say that Francis Ford Coppola has no ambition - the director planned a gigantic epic, larger in scale than Apocalypse Now and deeper than The Godfather: Megalopolis. It was said to have consumed him for decades; there is a 200+ page script circulating online that was likely an early draft of the project.

The movie, about a New York utopia will never be made for a number of reasons: 1) Francis Ford Coppola has an infamously fractured relationship with Hollywood studios. 2) Currently, he is only interested in making small independent pictures. 3) The budget needed for the ambitious project would never be approved as it can't possibly be considered financially viable. 4) Coppola is 77 and movies of this scale are way beyond the legendary director now.

There were murmurs that Megalopolis was close to being put into production in the late '90s or early '00s, but 9/11 happened which changed the landscape of cinema and a movie about a utopian New York was not seen as viable. Much can be found online about the abandoned project and there is a phenomenal amount of reading material, especially about the numerous characters and plots planned for the movie. Francis Ford Coppola will sadly probably die before his dream project gets even close to production. Cinema has moved on from the '70s and Coppola hasn't really moved with it.
