"The story of my life is not for the faint of heart. If somebody told you I was just your average, ordinary guy, not a care in the world, then somebody lied."

Fans in 2022 are swift to proclaim Tom Holland as the greatest on-screen web slinger of all time but this writer will not entertain such sacrilegious nonsense.

The greatest Spiderman to ever don the red and blue suit made his on-screen bow long before Marvel embarked on their soulless campaign to turn the cinematic industry into an interactive theme park. While Andrew Garfield and the aforementioned Holland both constitute worthy competition for this prestigious accolade, there's a reason why No Way Home's loudest cinema cheers were reserved for Tobey Maguire.

The oft-forgotten actor's tongue in cheek delivery at the beginning of 2002's Spiderman kicked off one of the most beloved superhero franchises of all time. Maguire's hilariously awkward yet endearing take on Peter Parker, coupled with his spectacular superhero feats on-screen, turned Sam Raimi's franchise into a global sensation, spawning two sequels in addition to his pivotal cameo role in Marvel's latest Spiderman outing.

Maguire's opening monologue served as the unforgettable introduction to one of the most celebrated cinematic iterations of a superhero ever seen, a film released at a time long before the superhero genre took over the box office.

Peter-Two? Keep telling yourself that, Marvel.
