10 Greatest Plot Twists In The History Of Cinema

10. Saw (2004)

Lionsgate Films

The Plot: Two men wake up, chained in a toilet. In between them: a dead body. Say what you want about the Saw franchise, but the central premise of the original remains, well, original. Potential victims of The Jigsaw Killer, the two men become embroiled in his game of complete-a-task-or-die, toiling over the morality of their situation until the film€™s absurd, shocking finale.

The Twist: The body isn't dead. It€™s Jigsaw himself.

Why It€™s Great: Absurd though it is, Jigsaw€™s reveal is the last, most shocking trick of a film chock-full of them. To see him rise slowly from the floor after being an almost afterthought in the film€™s milieu is to see one of the Horror genre€™s great moments. This is perhaps the most implausible twist on the list, and the one that loses impact most. But it€™s still a great moment, even more so when you consider the rest of the Saw franchise, which looked to bastardise the original€™s impact at every opportunity.
