10 Greatest Religious Horror Movies Of All Time

2. Rosemary's Baby

Exorcism of Emily Rose
Paramount Pictures

This film depicts a young couple by the name of Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse who move to a new apartment complex. The peculiar neighbours soon begin to take a distinct involvement in their lives, and eventually, sinister occurrences start. After discovering that she is pregnant, Rosemary begins to panic and realise that her baby might be in danger.

The ending revelation of the child being the son of the Devil and a result of Satanism is what the film is most known for. The movie makes no real secrets around it as all of the suspicions placed upon the audience are entirely correct. This gives the film a sense of the inevitable. Once Rosemary has found herself in this scenario, she has absolutely no way of stopping it.

That is where the religious horror comes in. The sense of the inescapable feels akin to the concept of damnation, and that makes the experience incredibly frightening.

Like The Omen, it is an absolute horror classic and acts as one of the pillars of the genre. It really helps to argue why horror should be taken seriously.
