10 Greatest Sci-Fi Movie Villains Of The 2020s (So Far)

Recent baddies you can't help but love.

The Invisible Man

Heroes are nice and all, but it's a well-known fact that everyone prefers a villain.

These rogues usually have the cooler costumes, the best one-liners, the sweetest weapons, and are more fun to dress up as for Hallowe'en. Being on the right side of morality is boring, played out, cliched. When you're the bad guy though - it's a whole different ballgame.

Sci-fi history is littered with some of the greatest antagonists in all of cinema. Darth Vader, HAL-9000, that damned board game from Jumanji. These are some of the most iconic wrong'uns to ever grace a screen.

The genre has continued this tradition into this current decade, as the 2020s have already produced some excellent ne'er-do-wells and we're only a couple of years in.

Some have been seen in films before, but have been given a fresh coat of paint for a modern audience. Some are adaptations of beloved figures from other mediums. We've even got some original characters on this list.

New ideas? In the film industry? In this day and age? Surely not!

If the rest of the decade can keep up this momentum, then sci-fi fans everywhere are going to have a great next few years.

10. Dr. Robotnik - Sonic The Hedgehog

The Invisible Man
Paramount Pictures

2020's Sonic the Hedgehog movie was far from perfect.

It was childish, it was formulaic, and the blue blur flossed way too much for anyone to feel comfortable. However, one good thing that came from the release was Jim Carrey's portrayal of series antagonist Dr. Robotnik.

The long-time baddie of the Sonic franchise made his live-action debut in style. He was hilariously unhinged, devilishly cruel, and had a moustache most people would kill for.

He was cartoony, but that wasn't out of step with the rest of the film. Carrey clearly understood the brief he was given and put his own imitable spin on the character whilst keeping it fairly faithful to the source material.

In the grand scheme of things, he's no Anton Chigurh or Hannibal Lecter, but was he ever going to be? Robotnik is a silly villain in a movie about a talking hedgehog from outer space, and he's the best possible version of that.

Whilst there might be better written or more complex characters on this list, few will remembered as fondly in the future as the Canadian's turn as this mad scientist.
