10 Greatest Sci-Fi Movie Villains Of The 2020s (So Far)

6. Adrian Griffin - The Invisible Man

The Invisible Man
Universal Pictures

Did you know that the title role of The Invisible Man was originally offered to John Cena?

He already had a lot of experience with people not seeing him.

Let's move on.

Directed by Saw and Insidious writer Leigh Whannell, this modern re-telling of the classic H. G. Wells story stars Elisabeth Moss as a woman stalked by the unseen form of her violent ex.

After the successful tech businessman Adrian Griffin seemingly takes his own life, Moss' Cecilia Kass is haunted by a supposed ethereal presence. As it turns out, it's actually Adrian wearing a special suit that renders him, well, invisible.

Clue's kind of in the name.

Whilst this film sometimes strays into sci-fi silliness, the presence of the invisible man is still chilling in a primal sense. Throw in Griffin's psychotic nature, which is expertly captured by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and you've got yourself a character that is far more interesting than just "spooky boy with magic suit."

Sometimes a story is so simply effective that it can endure for years. The Invisible Man is one of those stories, and its title character remains a terrifying villain over a century after his first appearance.
