10 Greatest Songs Written For Movies
7. Shallow - Lady Gaga (Shallow)
It's almost strange to think about how many questions were surrounding the latest iteration of the classic A Star is Born. While Bradley Cooper was already a heavyhitter in the acting world, the idea of him singing in his self-directed movie alongside Lady Gaga seemed a bit off-the-wall. However, any of our preconceived notions faded away the first time we heard "Shallow."
A Star is Born had already shown Gaga's phenomenal acting chops, but once she took center stage for this country-tinged rocker, things jumped up a notch. From the beginning of the tune, Cooper holds his own to start things off, but Gaga's commanding presence behind a microphone shows her marrying her over-the-top style to the more authentic rootsy rock she's working with.
Even though the mid-song, "AHH AHH AHH" part has become somewhat of a meme throughout the Internet, it takes a true artist to make the act of holding out notes like that feel like a pure emotional experience.
The accolades also showed up in spades once award season rolled around, with Gaga taking home an Oscar, Golden Globe, and a Grammy for this one tune. While critics can sometimes be divided as to what is great and what isn't, it's sometimes nice for everyone to agree that something kicks ass.
