10 Greatest Songs Written For Movies

3. I Disappear - Metallica (Mission Impossible 2)

The entire Mission Impossible franchise has had one of the oddest trajectories in film history. While most of the movies are looked at as some of the greatest action films ever put to film, the franchise's beginnings sometimes came off on the wrong side of cheesy. Even if the second instalment may get singled out as the worst of the bunch, it did have one awesome song to promote it.

Given the heavy nature of the soundtrack, it was a fantastic move getting Metallica to write a song for the movie. Though "I Disappear" fits comfortably in the band's maligned Load era, this is one of the few times where their hard rock formula works fairly well.

Though the song may not be as epic as some of their early masterpieces, the subtle lick from Kirk Hammett and use of dynamics makes the song a standout in the band's later period.

This song has also become notorious for being the song that started the entire Napster debacle, with leaks of the song on the music website causing Lars Ulrich to file legal action for music piracy. The fallout from this business tactic may have painted Metallica in a bad light, but if there was any Metallica song from this era worth pirating, this certainly wasn't a bad call.
