10 Greatest Stoner Movies Ever

4. Up In Smoke

Up In Smoke
Paramount Pictures

Cheech and Chong are the most famous stoners in the history of not only cinema, but the world. Their inaugural stoner movie was released in 1978, and has endured as a classic of the genre that countless films have since tried to imitate.

Incredibly, the film became the 12th highest-grossing film of that year, helping to propel the stoner movie into the quasi-mainstream stratosphere, a feat that hasn't ever really been achieved in the same way since. The success of the film spawned countless sequels, including Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, Nice Dreams, Still Smokin', Cheech & Chong's The Corsican Brothers.

The original, however, is easily the best, with the dynamic duo being deported to Mexico and then agreeing to drive a van full of weed back into the US. Nutty antics ensue, with the most memorable moments being the comically over-sized joints that the pair smoke and their run-ins with Stacy Keach's Sgt. Stedenko.
