Fitting for such an uneven franchise, the X-Men series doesn't have a consistent musical theme - in fact, no less than six separate composers having scored the seven films so far. 

Although Michael Kamen's theme for the first film is a good one (being somewhat reminiscent of a slowed-down version of the tune from the classic X-Men animated series), John Ottman's thumpingly strong theme from X-Men 2 is far and away the best of the franchise.

In fact, it was so good that Ottman and his theme returned for last year's Days Of Future Past, which is arguably the best X-Men film since the second one. In the case of X-Men, then, it seems that the music maketh the movie.
