10 Greatest Threequels Of All Time

6. The Godfather Part III

godfather3 The third and final part in Francis Ford Coppola's epic Mafia saga often gets a bad deal. It had to follow arguably the two greatest American films ever made so there was no shortage of expectation or hype, but the fact is, it's nowhere near as bad as everybody says it is. Yes it has numerous faults - it's too long, Sofia Coppola's casting, no Tom Hagen, the weird incestuous romance at the center of the film, I could go on, but overall, it is an interesting mediation on power, family and Catholic guilt masterfully told with a mighty performance from Al Pacino at the heart of it. We all know it's not as good as the first two, and it is impossible not to judge Part III against the previous two but there is a very good film in there hiding away beneath the years of harsh criticism. Part III wasn't helped by the fact it was released in the same year as Martin Scorsese's masterful Goodfellas either, but it still picked up awards nominations luxuriously. The Godfather Part III was a disappointment and it doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath of the first two, but it is a good film. Honest.
